Carson City sheriff's deputies cite 43 in second crosswalk operation
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office held a second pedestrian crosswalk operation Friday with 43 citations issued, the majority being for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, said Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
Although the number of citations issued was down from a similar operation held earlier this month in which 50 motorists were cited, the amount of stops shows motorists still need to do more as drivers to prevent pedestrian accidents involving vehicles, said McDaniel.
The operation was held on north Carson Street at Bath Street and then at Telegraph and Carson Street.
Similar to the Aug. 8 operation, a deputy dressed in bright orange clothing and hat entered the crosswalks at the locations using a pre-determined distance that gave operators of vehicles ample time to stop prior to the crosswalk.
The two operations were prompted by three motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians in three separate Carson City crosswalks. In all, 93 motorists were cited in the two operations.
“Many citizens stopped to thank the deputies for the work they were doing as they had nearly been struck by vehicles while in crosswalks,” said McDaniel.
The citations issued do not compare to the amount of vehicles that stopped for the deputy in the crosswalk, McDaniel notes.
“To those who stopped, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Carson City thank you for your safe driving habits,” he said.
