Carson City sheriff warns of scammer making phony phone calls threatening arrest
Another telephone scammer, this time claiming to be the Carson City undersheriff, has surfaced again. Sheriff Ken Furlong is warning citizens not to engage with the caller.
The sheriff's office is receiving a heavy volume of reports from area residents that they had received telephone calls from the current Carson Undersheriff, Steve Albertsen, and warned of a warrant for their arrest, said Furlong.
Telephone numbers where the calls have been coming from are inconsistent and some have fictitious recorded telephone messages when no one answers. Caller ID has suggested local telephone numbers, but this has been ruled out, said Furlong.
Reports have suggested that the caller may have some accurate information, such as addresses or types of vehicles. Most frequently, the scam informs the caller of an unpaid traffic violation resulting from intersections with camera enforcement mechanisms.
At this time says he isn't aware of any financial losses. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office apologizes for any inconvenience, and warns everyone not to engage in any conversation whatsoever with the caller.
Similar scam calls have surfaced before, from phony scammers claiming to be officers and saying they would be taking people to jail if there are any unpaid tickets.
