Saddle up for backcountry adventure
By the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association
A great way to experience a sense of adventure and discover incredible scenery is by horseback riding through the Shasta Cascade region.
Many trails found throughout the area include trails on National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, State Parks, and a couple of the National Parks that offer equestrian trails.
While traversing these trails riders can expect to experience breath taking country that cannot be seen in other parts of California.
Riders can also get a sense of what it may have been like for pioneers traveling across the country over some pretty treacherous terrain.
A few places that offer horseback riding services include Marble Mountain Guest Ranch, Wild Horse Sanctuary, Coram Ranch, Cockrell’s High Desert Lodging and Drakesbad Guest.
Each destination offers something different in both scenery and packages.
Marble Mountain Guest Ranch is a dude ranch that offers a “saddle/paddle” vacation, complete with home-style hospitality.
The Wild Horse Sanctuary has seasonal horse trips such as cattle drives and trail rides that can last two to three days with night stays in frontier-style cabins bordering Vernal Lake.
Coram Ranch offers guided equestrian rides for their guests, which consists of a scenic route on the Sacramento River, and through the rolling hills on their 20,000 acres. They even offer kiddy rides for the little ones that can’t reach the stirrups! Explore the Modoc National Forest and other areas surrounding the High Desert area while staying at the ranch.
Drakesbad Guest Ranch is listed on the list of National Historic Places, offering unique accommodations and horseback riding.
These and other places offer great horseback riding opportunities for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re seeking a dude ranch experience for several days, or a horseback ride for just a few hours, the Shasta Cascade region is the place to be.
A couple favorite trails can be found at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area and Lassen Volcanic National Park.
The Kanaka Trail at Whiskeytown is an excellent trail that leads riders to Shasta Bally with incredible views of the Trinity Alps, Mt. Shasta, and Lassen Peak.
At Lassen Volcanic National Park riders can enjoy the sights along with three overnight corrals for their horses and pack animals.
Load up the horses or make your reservation to experience an adventure in the Shasta Cascade region by horseback.
