State launches 2018 Nevada Fire Prevention Week poster contest
With a Carson High School student declared winner in the high school division of the 2017 Nevada Fire Prevention and Awareness poster contest, the state fire marshal is looking to award winners like CHS senior Ashley Figueroa as the best for its 2018 contest.
The Nevada State Fire Marshal, in coordination with the Fire Prevention Association of Nevada and participating Fire Departments statewide, have launched the second annual State of Nevada 2018 Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest.
This year’s National Fire Prevention Association Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” works to educate about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire – and how to escape safely in the event of one.
“LOOK” for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.
“LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should meet.
“LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.
Contest rules and details can be found on the Nevada State Fire Marshal web page at http://fire.nv.gov/
Applicants:
• Elementary level, 5th and 6th grades
• Middle School
• High School
Winning posters will be selected from each of the three applicant categories listed in the contest rules and their posters placed on billboards in the Elko, Reno/Sparks, Carson City and Las Vegas areas.
Each winner will receive a plaque from the Nevada State Fire Marshal and the Fire Prevention Association of Nevada (FPAN) and recognition from the National Fire Protection Association.
Last year’s contest winners were from also fro Reno and Pahrump. In October 2017 then CHS junior Ashley Figueroa was presented a certificate proclaiming her winner of the State Fire Prevention and Awareness poster contest in the High School category.
Ashley was honored with her poster, which was placed on billboards in Carson City, Reno, Sparks, Elko and Las Vegas areas.
Nevada State Fire Marshal Bart Chambers, Carson City Fire Marshal Dave Ruben, Carson City Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Vaughan, Regional Education Specialist of the National Fire Protection Association Jeff Donahue and Vice President of the Fire Prevention Association of Northern Nevada Sylvia Lee presented the CHS student with a certificate of merit.
