Carson City man jailed on felony child abuse charge

A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of child abuse after allegedly hitting his juvenile-age son and kicking him out a car, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Christian Omar Rivera is being held on $40,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers were called to the area of South Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive at 1:59 p.m. on a report of a child kicked out of a car. Dispatch reported that an adult male driving a white Cadillac got into altercation with a juvenile who was riding in the vehicle, and then drove away leaving the child behind.

Officers stopped the Cadillac as it was driving north on Lompa and spoke with Rivera, who asked officers if they were looking for him and his son after they got into a fight, the arrest report states.

Rivera advised his son was mouthing off in the car and was refusing to listen, and then wanted out of the vehicle. Rivera told officers that he struck his son in the mouth and that the boy become angry and began kicking and trying to hit his father, causing him to have to hold him down in the backseat of the vehicle.

An officer asked the man where his son was. Rivera pointed to a boy walking west in a parking lot toward Lompa Lane. The officer observed the boy had a black right eye, marks similar to fingers on his neck on the right side and his shirt was stretched, showing red marks on the right side of his chest, the report states.

The officer asked the boy what happened to his eye. The boy told the officer: “I don’t know. Probably when my dad punched me.” Officers interviewed witnesses who noted there was a confrontation in the vehicle. Rivera stated he would never back hand or punch his children, the arrest report states. One witness advised he saw arms from both flailing but did not witness either making physical contact though the witness said it seemed like the man was pulling the boy out of the car, the report states. Rivera was arrested at 2:38 p.m.
