Final weekend run of Youth Theatre Carson City's 'Once On This Island Jr.'
Youth Theatre Carson City is celebrating its final weekend performance of "Once On This Island, Jr.," an exciting adaptation of the classic fairy tale, "The Little Mermaid," but with a Caribbean flair.
The show, directed by Andie Anderson, will run a final time this weekend, August 16-17 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.
With its poignant story and catchy Caribbean flavored score, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, JR. is a feast for the heart mind and soul. The highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular Grimm fairy tale garnered 8 Tony Award nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score.
In almost non-stop song and dance, the show tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
The cast is comprised entirely of children ages five to eighteen. The role of Ti Moune is played Cassia Giustra, age 12, and Sara Session, age 16. Also featured is a cast of lively characters brought to life by over 40 local youth including Trenton Lynn, 13, and Lucas Abreu, 11, as Daniel; Brianda Diaz, 13, and Alexa Haight, 13, as Erzulie, the Goddess of Love; and Braeden Garrett, 18 as Papa Ge, the Demon of Death. Also rounding out the cast are a host of young actors, singers and dancers bringing to life this timeless tale!
Youth Theatre Carson City is a new and exciting youth theatre company operating primarily at the Carson City Community Center as part of the Carson City Recreation Department. Our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive environment for young people and their families to explore, create, learn and grow through quality theatrical experiences.
Youth Theatre Carson City produces three to five fully- staged theatrical productions per year featuring all-youth casts, and offers stage crew and other technical opportunities to those youth wanting to be more “behind the scenes.”
We also offer theatre arts classes and workshops year-round for students of all ages.
Youth Theatre Carson City was founded by Northern Nevada native, Andie Anderson. Anderson has been a part of the arts community in Northern Nevada for over twenty years. She just recently earned her Master of Arts Degree in Theatre Education from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts and is ecstatic to be back in her hometown sharing her love of the arts with the young people of this community.
“I can’t be more proud of this cast,” commented Anderson. “This has been one of our most challenging productions to date and these students have more than risen to that challenge. ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, JR. is a beautiful show that should not be missed.”
