Brush fire chews 123 acres at Carson City rifle range
Fire crews have knocked down a 123-acre blaze that started late Saturday morning near the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range off Flint Drive near the landfill.
Called the Rifle Fire, flames and smoke that billowed through the eastern edge of Carson City were extinguished after several agencies, helicopters and air tankers attacked the fire head-on through the afternoon and into the evening reports the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
An air tanker was taken off the fire and some equipment was moved out of the area after 5 p.m., said Helen Frazier of the dispatch center.
Earlier the fire had been pushed by light winds and was spreading at a moderate rate Frazier said. No structures were burned.
Helicopter and airplane air strike teams had fought the fire as well as other outside fire agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service, Nevada Division of Forestry, Lyon County and Storey County.
The fire was burning in light fuels, predomonately grass and sagebrush, Frazier said.
Carson City Sheriff's deputies had closed the range and directed traffic away from the area. Barricades blocked all access roads.
The fire was on Bureau of Land Management property and was reported at about 11:50 a.m.
Rifle range users were ordered off the property. During the evacuation of the area, law officers moved homeless camps and squatters from the area.
