Songs about life: Award-winning songwriter opens for Pablo Cruise
With songwriting credits that include “Wild One,” recorded by Faith Hill and “Stranded,” made famous by Heart, Jaime Kyle made a mark in the music world a long time ago.
Throughout her career, her songs have been recorded by numerous artists, featured on CD’s with combined sales of more than 19 million worldwide and has recorded and performed with such legendary artists as Leon Russell, Patty Griffin, Richard Marx, Amy Grant and Ozzy Osbourne. Today, she continues to perform her original music for audiences throughout Northern California.
She takes the stage ahead of Pablo Cruise for A Concert Under the Stars a fundraiser for The greenhouse Project, July 11.
Kyle first got her start on Star Search and had grown up playing and singing in a variety of bands. It wasn’t until later she realized people could actually make money writing songs.
“People still cut my songs, and I write what I know,” she said. “Wild One (which made recording history for a debut artist, spending four weeks at #1 on Country Billboard Charts) was really about my life … my parents had it tough.”
Kyle describes herself as a “mostly emotional writer,” more than a story writer.
“When I try to write for the wrong reasons, I get stuck,” Kyle said. “The intention is different and so that brings me back around to the idea that when you share your story, people understand and connect with the truth in it.”
“Who I Am,” penned by Kyle as a response to her mother’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis is one of those songs.
“Mom just seemed sort of out of it and when I got to the hospital a female doctor asked her what year it was and Mom said ‘1975,’” Kyle said. “(Mom) had left and I didn’t see her again.”
The song has garnered five film festival awards and taken on a life of its own.
“It is ironic,” she said.
As for longevity in a business known for fickleness, Kyle celebrates those changes.
“I am so grateful John (Procaccini) asked me to do this show,” she said. “It is a new day and music is going through a transition that gives the artist more say and control.”
For A Concert Under the Stars, Kyle will perform her own versions of is her mega hits “Wild One” and “Stranded,” in addition to her other songs.
“Before every show I get nervous and then the first song comes and there I am and while feelings are part of (a performance), it’s like recharging again…confirmation that I am still aware and working on things to better my self,” she said. “When you make good music and are coming from the right place, you can live with yourself.
“As a musician and a producer I like myself and know I am doing the right thing.”
Kyle is currently working on a new CD produced by Jimmy Webb.
“I am so excited about the project and have received incredible support from amazing people.”
