Teams now forming for Carson City’s Relay For Life
Carson City area walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
This celebration brings together numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer in a unified effort to fight back.
Teams of enthusiastic residents will gather at Centennial Field for an overnight relay from 10am July 16th to 10am July 17th. The event celebrates anyone who has battled cancer and their caregivers and also remembers loved ones lost.
Last year more than 70 teams took part in the Relay, this year organizers hope to register 100. Teams from across Carson City are signing up now and more teams are still needed.
Relay For Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants, including patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, faith-based groups and community volunteers, to join together to fight cancer. It reminds us that progress has been made in the fight against cancer and that everyone can make a difference.
For the first time, this year’s Carson City Relay will be a full 24 hour event. The entire schedule is packed with family friendly entertainment and fun. KTVN, Channel 2’s morning meteorologist Ron Percivalle is scheduled to co-host the opening ceremony.
Scheduled performances include Controlled Burn, Hick’ry Switch, The Mile High Jazz Band and many more. The event will also be packed with activities, games and contests.
Cancer survivors open the relay by making the first lap. Later in the evening the Luminaria Ceremony takes place. The luminarias are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions. But despite the seriousness of fighting cancer, a festive atmosphere always develops around the track area at Relay For Life events. As participants make new friends and spend time with old ones, the Relay celebration and camp-out begins. Team members come together to celebrate, barbeque, play games and walk the track for a great cause.
“Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fund raiser,” said Jeffrey Stepanski, event chair. “Many of the participants will be people who have been dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in reducing cancer death rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”
“The money raised will help fund educational programs, research and services to patients,” said Stepanski. “Due to the generosity of Carson City residents and businesses the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”
