Snow for Show: Heavenly's 'Winter of all Winters'
The latest storm to hit South Lake Tahoe helped boost Heavenly Mountain Resort's year-to-date snow totals well past the 400-inch mark, or more than 30 feet, roughly enough snow to cover the famous Babe the Blue Ox statue in Klamath, Calif.
This is the third-best snow season in Heavenly’s history and forecasters are predicting as much as six more feet before this round of storms clears.
“This has truly been the ‘winter of all winters’ for Heavenly and with a 12-foot base of snow it’s about to become a sensational spring!” said John Wagnon, Heavenly’s vice president of sales and marketing. “Storm clouds will give way to sunny skies and an abundant amount of snow – the two best ingredients for spring skiing and riding.”
With this newly fallen snow, Heavenly’s director of skier services, Mike Allen, offers a few quick tips for skiing powder. “The most important thing to remember when skiing powder is to maintain a balanced stance. Don’t worry if your skis disappear in a snow cloud occasionally just keep a centered stance. Try to avoid “over-turning” in powder as this will stall your momentum. We welcome skiers and riders of all levels to join us for a refresher lesson as ski school as conditions change on the mountain.”
(I would like to add to Michael's words a few of my own. Never site back in powder, you lose control of yoour skis. Keep skis parallel and turn both at the same time. Don't worry about gaining too much speed, the powder will slow you down. keep both hands well forward.
