Changes coming to Carson Now
This past year and a half has been like a rocket ride for us at Carson Now.
Our readership has exploded to the point where we are now the most visited news website for local Carson City readers. We have also seen rising interest in advertising from local businesses, reflective of the increase in traffic as well as an improving economy.
These developments are leading us to embark on several changes for this website, some of which are rolling out this week. Last year as part of my Knight Fellowship at Stanford, I did a lot of research on how to make advertising for local news websites more effective for advertisers, while balancing the interests of the readers. As such, you will start noticing some changes in our advertising placements today. We hope to refine these changes in the coming weeks.
These changes are also being made in preparation for an overall site redesign coming later this year, aimed at making our content work better on mobile devices. We have seen a sharp increase in readers viewing Carson Now on smartphones and tablets, and it's long past due that we adapt the site to fit these devices.
But the biggest change is going to be on the content side. Because of our recent successes, we are planning on growing our editorial staff. Our goal is to double the amount of stories we produce by the end of March, expanding our coverage of local business, government, sports, entertainment and education.
Our plan is to add one reporter/editor to our staff, as well as a few freelance correspondents to cover topics like high school sports and entertainment. We are still finalizing the details for these new positions, but if you are interested, please let us know.
None of this would be possible without our readers. Not only do we have a great core of regular readers, but many of them also submit stories, photos, videos and other content. This site was founded on the idea that news is a conversation, and the audience should participate in this discussion. We pledge to always try and keep Carson Now open to local readers who want to have their voices heard.
We thank you for your support.
