Stepped up traffic enforcement in Douglas, Lyon counties aims to target distracted drivers
Deputies of the Douglas County and Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices have increased traffic enforcement patrols on various highways and roadways within the two counties. The added patrol began Monday and runs through Feb. 22.
The increased patrols will specifically target distracted drivers, motorists using their cell phones and those speeding, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pat Brooks.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office will hold similar saturation patrols Saturday, Feb. 22 and again Feb. 28. National traffic studies have shown that these types of targeted patrols provide an increased risk of detection of violators, thereby reducing the number of drivers willing to risk committing violations.
This enforcement detail is partially paid for by a grant from the State of Nevada, Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.
“The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is committed to keeping the roads and highways of our community safe," said Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini. "As part of that effort, we will be conducting additional traffic enforcement details when resources allow, particularly targeting distracted drivers and speeders.”
Sheriff Pierini reminds the public that hands-free communication devices have been required in the State of Nevada since October 1st, 2011. Drivers may not hold a cell phone or communication device in their hand while operating a motor vehicle on any highway in the State of Nevada, even when stopped at a traffic signal.
