New Principal Tasha Fuson Shows Promise For Carson High School
Carson High has a new principal to call the shots around the school. Tasha Fuson stepped up to take over the biggest position Carson High offers to begin her 20th year in education. Mrs. Fuson has lived in Washoe Valley for the last seven years after growing up in Las Vegas. She chose Carson because she lives close and she (and her family) have been highly involved in the community for the last seven years.
When I asked her how Carson has been different from any other school she has taught at she responded with, “It has lots of tradition. It’s a school that has been through four locations and 140 years of education.” The biggest challenge so far for her has been entering a new district and doing everything without a vice principal. She was the principal at Spanish Springs, but obviously had a Vice Principal. She was excited to say that there should be a new Vice Principal by the end of next week.
Her big goal she hopes to accomplish by the end of the year is to better prepare students for higher level education. This year she said she was going to look very closely at how we are preparing the student body for college. She will be very inspective of how the guidance counselors are working and ensure that every student is taking the most academically rigorous courses within their abilities. She also brought up Carson’s high graduation rate and Advanced Placement (AP) passing rates, but wants to decrease the level of students that enroll in remedial classes their freshman year of college.
I have interviewed the previous principal of Carson High a couple of times, and talked to him on several occasions; however, this one interview with Mrs. Fuson was different previous meetings with the last principal. As a member of the student body, I think that this new and exciting take in the principal position with Mrs. Fuson will really engage the student body.
Engaging the student body and getting students involved is crucial with so many studies backing that students who get involved with their school lead to more success. It appears that all the pieces are there for an incredibly successful school year and career for Mrs. Fuson at Carson High School. As the Student Body Vice President myself, I would like to welcome you to the Carson High family and I hope you’re ready for an exciting year!
