Local Non-Profit to Award 38 Scholarships to Nevada High Schoolers May 8, 2015
Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada (the Reno Ronald McDonald House® or RMHC® Northern Nevada), a home-away-from-home for families living 30 miles outside of Reno that have a child receiving critical treatment at an area hospital, has selected the winning applicants for its RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program and will recognize them at a ceremony at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa Friday, May 8, 2015. Of the 38 students, 64 percent are the first in their family to attend college and several have overcome challenges such as severe illness, family depression and financial hardships.
“Our selection process allows us to award to students who may not have had a chance otherwise to get a higher education without financial assistance,” said Marty Ozer, executive director for the Reno Ronald McDonald House®. “Our GPA requirements are less rigid than other scholarships, meaning we have a chance to help an under-served population in northern Nevada. This year we had 160 candidates, the most we’ve had since our program began.”
RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program recipients are selected based on financial need, community involvement and academic performance. The required grade point average (GPA) is 2.7. Scholarships are awarded in $1,000 increments and can be renewed for up to three years for a total of $4,000. In its fifteenth year, the RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program will have given assistance to 689 northern Nevada students, totaling more than $1.1 million in dollars awarded.
Recipients are selected from a pool of northern Nevada applicants who meet the criteria and plan to enroll full-time in a course of higher education, whether it be formal four-year university, two-year degree program, or a vocational or trade program.
“This program allows us to offer a wider range of students a shot at realizing their dreams, regardless of whether they ranked first in a class of 300 or not,” said Ozer. “These recipients represent our donors’ and supporters’ dedication to every child who is willing to work hard for a better life.”
The RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program comprises a network of participating RMHC® homes across the country aided by RMHC® Global in order to help students pursue their education goals. In northern Nevada, funds are donated by individuals, companies and entities and matched by RMHC® Global up to $18,500.
Check-in for the ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. and the program will start at 7:00 p.m. For media inquiries or further questions, contact Rachel Gattuso at rachel@rmhc-reno.org or (775) 322-4663.
