Friendship Ball crowns its king and queen
There was a prom king and a queen to be crowned yet again at the 2014 Friendship Ball this last Saturday. The event took place from about 6:30-9 P.M. at Carson High School’s Senator Square.
The annual friendship ball is the prom made exclusively for the special needs students within Carson High School. One of the biggest disabilities that affect the students is Autism.
This year’s Friendship Ball king was Ivan Medina and the queen was Maria Gonzalez. Ivan and Maria were the only true graduating seniors this year; therefore, they were the only nominated king and queen candidates.
“It is important for the kids to have a prom of their own. One of the biggest problems we face with adaptive students is they don’t feel included. I think it is a great way to have all the kids get together in a safe environment and have a really great time with each other,” said Jace Zampirro, one of the adaptive peer tutors at Carson High School.
Carson High School really enjoys putting on the event every year. This year’s committee chair to plan the event was Kassidy Cox. Kassidy is a sophomore at Carson High School and is currently the sophomore class representative.
“There is nothing like seeing the smiles on all of their faces when they get showered with the paparazzi when they first walk in,” said commented Kassidy. “The event ran really smoothly and we received a lot of positive feedback from all of the students.”
The event surely will be one that will return every year including next year around the same time. The event is not open to the public, but for the exclusive group who gets to be involved with it, it is a very pleasant and motivating thing to see.
