Senators aim for Regional Championship in Wrestling
The Carson High School Wrestling team has been one of the most successful sports in the long and prestigious history of Carson High School. Over the last six years they have won 30 consecutive league dual matches and six straight Sierra League titles. In 2012 the Senator wrestlers were crowned Northern Nevada’s NIAA Regional Champions and they are gunning for that distinction again this year.
The 2014 Northern Regional Championships take place this weekend Friday the14th and Saturday the 15th. The two-day tournament takes place at Reno High School and begins at 3pm on Friday and 9am on Saturday. The top three finishers from each of the 14 weights will represent the Northern Region in the NIAA Div I State Championship the next weekend at Primm, NV.
Carson City is led into the tournament by a host of highly experienced seniors in Sammy Mercado (113), Dominic Kinder (126), Kyle Sharp (132), Nicholas Lani (138), and Cody Cunningham (170). All of these seniors are looking to go out on a high note and are expected to challenge for regional titles. They would like nothing more than to show their younger colleagues how to get it done.
Those younger Senators are not too shabby themselves, and too are blessed with an enormous amount of athletic talent. At 106 pounds Freshman Brandon Basa will be a force as he has shown throughout the year. Austin Martinez, wrestling at 120’s, has been solid. Sophomore Brady O’Keefe placed 4th at regionals last year at 145 pounds and will challenge for a regional title this year. At 152’s Carson’s Nolan Shine has been steady, racking up wins in the face of stiff competition. Brady Rivera (182) has proven he can compete with the best wrestlers in the state; this weekend will be no different. He is a favorite for a regional title. Connor Sievers (195), Sheldon Miller (220) and Cory Jasper (220/Hwt) round out the heavyweight group. Miller, just a freshman, has been a pleasant surprise for the Senators and has an outside chance at a medal this weekend.
All in all the Senators are going to put on a show. At the end of the meet this should be a race between Spanish Springs and the Senators. It is shaping up to be a wild finish, just like it was in 2012 when Carson beat Spanish Springs by a single victory’s margin.
