Project Pink
We are bringing mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends together to learn from the experts about how breast cancer effects family risk factors. Sponsored by The Safeway Foundation, PROJECT PINK 2010 is designed to target women who have had breast cancer or who have an immediate family member with breast cancer.
Nationally and locally there are many programs regarding good breast health, prevention, and early detection, all of which are extremely important. Education programs for breast cancer survivors are few. There are many unanswered questions that arise after treatment ends. Many women live with the fear of recurrence or worry about their daughters, mothers or sisters.
Project Pink is an opportunity for breast cancer survivors to come together and learn more about what being a survivor means. We address the following issues;
- Follow-up appointments, what is the appropriate schedule and timeline for good vigilance.
- Who do I do follow-up with and for how many months or years after treatment?
- What should my doctor be doing annually to help me stay cancer free?
- Who should be genetically tested? What is the process? What is the cost? Most importantly what do the results mean to me and my female family members?
- After breast surgery what kind of mammography do I need?
- Should I continue self-exams? Even on a reconstructed or surgically altered breast?
- What does the radiologist see on a mammogram? On an ultra-sound? What is a diagnostic mammogram?
- What do I do to educate my sister, my daughter, my aunt, or my mother?
- What do they need to know about my breast diagnosis?
- Has my diagnosis changed our family history?
- If I have a recurrence, what next?
There is very little out there for the breast cancer survivor to help guide them with many issues that come along after treatment. Helping a survivor understand the importance of good regular follow up and having a clear understanding of what kind of active role they can play in ensuring a healthy future is a way of empowering breast cancer survivors for the long term.
We encourage all breast cancer survivors to bring their immediate female family members with them and learn from the experts.
