Latin music workshop and free concert

On Saturday, May 12, Carson City Symphony's Strings in the Schools will hold a Latin Music Workshop and concert at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City. Led by Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch and guest percussionists Liz White, Kevin Conlin, and Gerald Larson from the University of Nevada, Reno, the workshop is open to string players of all ages at no cost. The Browsers Corner Book Store will hold its biggest book sale of the year beginning Friday. Everything will be for sale at half price for more than a week - from Friday, August 29 through Saturday, Sept. 6. The store is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. On Saturday, August 30 the sale will spill over onto the parking lot.

Members of the Friends of the Library will receive an extra 10 percent discount on Friday, August 29 only - they must bring their membership card to receive a discount. All proceeds benefit the Carson City Library.

Labor Day rally calls attention to maternal health care and birthing practices

A rally to call attention to maternal health care issues will be held Sept. 1, Labor Day at the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City. Thousands of families and healthcare providers in all 50 states will rally to call attention to what advocates say is a crisis in American maternal health care.

Though the U.S. has the highest maternity care costs in the world, it ranks 45th in maternal safety, according to data from the United Nations, which lists the United States maternal death rate as tied with that of Iran and Hungary.

The World Concert, an original blend of diverse musicians, aerialists and dancers, is produced by Trails and Vistas, a Truckee, CA-based nonprofit organization dedicated to producing inspiring art events in nature, in collaboration with the Truckee Tahoe Peace Project.

OXS Gallery features art and words of noted Nevada writers

University offers classes on ways for Nevada farmers to extend growing season

With Nevada’s climate, more farmers are looking for ways to extend the growing season. University of Nevada, Reno’s High Desert Farming Initiative is offering a class for Nevada’s agricultural producers, “The Business of Season Extension Farming,” to provide information on field-tested methods for extending the growing season, as well information on reducing risk, low-cost marketing and financial planning. The course will be 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Sept. 12 at the Nye County Cooperative Extension office in Pahrump.

Signups begin for third annual CASI 5K Walk and Fun Run

Time to lace up the jogging shoes and strut with the pooches Saturday, Sept. 20 in Carson City. It's the third annual Carson Animal Services Initiative's 5K9 fun run/walk at Riverview Park on East Fifth Street in Carson City.

The fundraising event is a great way for families to show off their pets while giving them some exercise too. Awards will be given to the 1st place male and female K9 finishers. Every participant receives a free gift.

Check-in time is between 8:15 - 8:45 a.m. with the run beginning at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is encouraged and discounted fees are offered.

The tournament is at Eagle Valley Golf Course and the format will be handicapped 4 player teams on the west course and 4 player scramble on the east course. There will be a continental breakfast ahead of the tournament, which begins at 8:30 a.m.

Nevada Walk & 5K for Hemophilia

For the first time in its history, The Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation will host two Hemophilia Walks on the same day to help raise critical funds and awareness for those Nevadans affected by inherited bleeding and clotting disorders including Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease.

A one mile walk and 5K are scheduled in Las Vegas and Reno on September 27, 2014 with goals to raise at least $50,000 in each city. This will be the first ever Hemophilia Walk held in Reno.

3rd Annual Red Shoe Gala Set to Raise Funds for Families with Children in Area Hospitals
