Hello fellow anglers. Renee and I took a few more trips around the Sierra over the last couple weeks, and yes there was fishing involved. We first camped for 5 days on the East Fork of the Carson River. It was brisk in the morning, but very toasty in the afternoon.

This is my last article for 2023, but I’ll be back early next year. I thought I would look back on all the gardening experiences I had this year. The year started less than auspiciously. We were without power, water or heat for five days. That was followed by flooding, which provided our annual rainfall in one week.

I was thinking that autumn was supposed to be a slower time of year for landscape and gardening chores. I have so many tasks lined up, I don’t know where to begin — fertilize the lawns, shut down the garden, finish picking apples, prune trees, decide whether to deadhead perennials or not, shut down the irrigation system, and winterize the tools and machines.

This morning there was an annular solar eclipse. The clips started about 8:05 a.m. and lasted for a couple of hours. The pictures are part of a series and were taken at 10 minute intervals. The GIF file is a combination of the series. Although the start was shrouded in cloud cover, the majority of the eclipse was pretty clear.

Through all the gardener’s challenges this year, vegetable gardens in the Ranchos still provided a bountiful harvest. Something to be grateful for. A pleasure to share with neighbors, friends, and colleagues alike.

On Saturday morning, eyes went to the skies for the annual solar eclipse that took place. Photos were submitted by Bill Hopp, Donald Scott, Edward Howell and Randy and Vivian Spiker.

Fall is upon us. While many of us are enjoying pumpkin spiced lattes and carving pumpkins, we are also strolling along the river corridor to look at the changing leaves in our cottonwoods.

Fall is a great time to get out and add to our cottonwood population along the river. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the community to come out and plant young cottonwoods with staff at Carson River Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun the annual process of closing National Forest recreational facilities around the Lake Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, and picnic areas.

In late summer, rabbitbrush, a gorgeous plant despite its unflattering specific name which means “nauseating,” lines the highways and clusters in clumps between the sagebrush with a striking combination of golden flowers and silver-green foliage. — Elna Bakker, An Island Called California.

It was 39 degrees the morning that I write this and 30 degrees expected before the week is out — autumn is definitely here. I shut down my vegetable garden.
