We first camped for 5 days on the East Fork of the Carson River. It was brisk in the morning, but very toasty in the afternoon.

The year started less than auspiciously. We were without power, water or heat for five days. That was followed by flooding, which provided our annual rainfall in one week.

Forest Service pile burning begins in Douglas, Washoe, Alpine and Mono counties

I have so many tasks lined up, I don’t know where to begin — fertilize the lawns, shut down the garden, finish picking apples, prune trees, decide whether to deadhead perennials or not, shut down the irrigation system, and winterize the tools and machines.

Oct. 14 annular solar eclipse

The pictures are part of a series and were taken at 10 minute intervals. The GIF file is a combination of the series. Although the start was shrouded in cloud cover, the majority of the eclipse was pretty clear.

Fall is a great time to get out and add to our cottonwood population along the river. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the community to come out and plant young cottonwoods with staff at Carson River Park from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Seasonal closures apply to many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, and picnic areas.
