Flocchini Family Provisions Ale Grilled Chorizo Dog

We are in the midst of a hot summer that is drawing folks out of the kitchen and in front of the grill. For my family, in particular, whether we are hosting a party or just a typical Sunday barbecue, there’s something incredible about being outside, gazing at the sun settling in the Sierra Nevadas while a bratwurst or fresh piece of salmon is sizzling on the grill.

Where else in the world can you traverse a forest composed entirely of dilapidated and half-buried cars, photograph a plaster ghost riding a bicycle next to a giant metal penguin and miner, admire eloquent murals depicting history, and watch 30-foot flames shoot from the antennae of a giant metal praying mantis? Nevada, of course. And the 2017 Nevada Magazine Silver State Scavenger Hunt is the perfect way to do it.

JoAnne Skelly: Where to catch up on the latest gardening trends

The topic of gardening can, at times, appear unchanging. Plant needs are consistent and basic: water, support, nutrients, sunlight and carbon dioxide. Seeds are generally planted in the same way. Maintenance doesn’t change much. How many ways are there to harvest a tomato, an apple or other delectable edible? However, since gardening is one of our most popular hobbies, it is big business.

Nevada Humane Society Animal Files: Making lemonade out of lemons

It’s hard to find someone that wasn’t impacted by our recent weather. From heavy rains and flooding to serious snow and ice, everyone in our community was affected in some form. The animals, homeless pets especially, were among those.

JoAnne Skelly: Create Holiday Floral Arrangements

Let your inner floral designer out and do some holiday bouquets. First, choose a container. Then decide what will hold the flowers in place. When I use a vase, I just put the flowers and greens in loosely. You can place clear marbles or pebbles in the bottom to hold the flowers.

Sometimes florists use a crisscross pattern of floral tape over the mouth of the vase to give stability to the arrangement. However, to make a French bouquet, a centerpiece or a one-sided arrangement, use floral foam in a low container.

Coffee-ring phenomenon explained in new theory developed by UNR researchers

The formation of a simple coffee stain has been the subject of complex study for decades, though it turns out that there remain some stones still to be turned. Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno have modeled how a colloidal droplet evaporates and found a previously overlooked mechanism that more accurately determines the dynamics of particle deposition in evaporating sessile droplets, which has ramifications in many fields of today’s technological world.

JoAnne Skelly: Give a Living Christmas Tree

Here’s another take on gift giving. Give a living Christmas tree in a pot that your gift receiver can plant in their yard after Christmas. If you give a tree, include these tips. While indoors, check the moisture content of the root ball daily. Water it when the top two inches of soil feels dry.

Flocchini Family Provisions Italian Stuffing

Growing up in a large Italian family, the holiday season is always celebrated with two things – bringing the entire family together and eating a delicious home cooked meal. Our family has been in the meat business since the 1930’s, so any holiday where you leave the table feeling anything but stuffed is considered uneventful.

JoAnne Skelly: Avoid wormy apples or pears next year

The apple harvest is almost over. We have picked so many red delicious apples at our house, we don’t care there are still some on the tree. I had thought a freeze in late May had destroyed all the flowers. Surprise! The recent winds have blown down many of the apples remaining on the tree.

JoAnne Skelly: Is Pampas grass a problem?

My friend Paul asked me to write about pampas grass, Cortaderia selloana, which in some parts of the country has become a problem invasive plant. While it is not on the noxious weed list (listed as noxious by law) for Nevada or California, Nevada plant ecologists consider it potentially invasive in the Las Vegas area and the California Invasive Plant Council has categorized it as a “high” threat to the state’s wildlands.

JoAnne Skelly: Safe ways to go about stopping cottonwood suckers

We have about 25 48-year-old cottonwood (poplar) trees that give us wonderful shade, shelter the birds and protect us from the wind. Unfortunately, cottonwoods sucker profusely from spreading tree roots. They sprout in the lawn, flowerbeds, driveway and even the patio.

JoAnne Skelly: Fall crocus flower brings lovely burst of color

What a surprise awaited me one morning a week ago as I was watering. I had completely forgotten this wonderful late summer gem, thinking bulb blooming time was over until next spring. However, the fall-flowering crocus amazed me once again.

Harvest time ahead: When to pick apples

When are apples, pears or vegetables ripe and ready to pick? Size and color are not always reliable in determining picking time for apples and pears. They develop to the highest quality when picked “mature,” a stage of development prior to “ripe.”
