Judge Tom Armstrong seeks re-election for Carson City Justice of the Peace Department 1

Judge Tom Armstrong seeks re-election to Department I of the Carson City Justice/Municipal Court. Judge Armstrong was elected to the bench in 2012 and 2018, after he was appointed to fill the position by the Carson City Board of Supervisors in May of 2011, selected from a number of applicants.
He looks forward to serving the people of Carson City for the next term and continuing to utilize his experience for the benefit of the people of Carson City.
As the Justice of the Peace, Judge Armstrong strives to continuously evaluate and address the needs of our community in the courts. To that end, he has established a Misdemeanor Treatment Court, a drug court program focused on rehabilitation of young drug addicts.
Judge Armstrong says, “during my time on the bench for the past 12-plus years, I have collaborated with local community leaders and other members of the judiciary to develop a successful and dynamic program to positively intervene in the lives of Carson City’s young misdemeanor offenders.
"I am proud of the success of the Misdemeanor Treatment Court yet strive to make it the best program it can be, because Carson City deserves it.
"Beyond that, I am humbled to serve this wonderful community, and commit each day to apply my continuing experience to provide fair and impartial justice to all who use Carson City’s Justice and Municipal Courts.”
Judge Armstrong was named the 2017 Judge of the year by the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction and is a former President of that organization. He currently serves by appointment on the Supreme Court’s specialty court funding and policy committee. Additionally, he is a former alternate member of the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline, previously appointed by the Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court.
He has practiced law in Carson City since 2001. He worked as a Senior Deputy District Attorney, where he prosecuted criminal cases ranging from minor traffic offenses to murder. He continued his career in private practice where he further developed his balanced legal background that he brings to the bench. He has extensive courtroom experience, including criminal prosecution and defense, civil litigation, and appellate work in the Nevada Supreme Court.
He was raised in Carlin, Nevada. He graduated with distinction from the University of Nevada in 1996 and received his law degree in 2000 from the University of Utah where he was honored as a William H. Leary scholar. Furthermore, he has successfully completed many hours of judicial training and education, including time as an instructor for the Nevada Judges of Limited Jurisdiction.
Judge Armstrong is former Director for C.I.R.C.L.E.S and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada. He is a former instructor of evidence law at Western Nevada College and taught law-related classes at the Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy during his time with the District Attorney’s office and on the bench.
He lives in Carson City with his wife Katie and his two young children.
