The "Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" committee is seeking volunteers, sponsors, and program advertisers for the ninth annual festival, August 4 to 19, 2012. The festival, which began in 2004, is presented by Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and jazz lovers. It includes more than 100 world class, regional musicians in over 30 performances and special programs at multiple venues in Carson City’s historic district, near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Carson City’s rich and intriguing history is explored and theatrically relived in our seasonal Ghost Walking Tours with the first tour taking place on May 26, 2012 at 1 p.m.

The Carson City Ghost Walk is a delightfully spooky and enjoyable way to experience Carson City’s Victorian Era and diverse past. Hear about lingering spirits of the past, haunted and paranormal stories. This is a spirit lead, guided walking tour of the downtown district’s historic homes.

You've got one more chance to see "Forever Plaid," a musical trip through time with a quartet of the same name. Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Performance Hall in Carson City is closing night for this very musical comedy about four men who died in a car crash on their way to their first public performance as Forever Plaid.
Starring is this look back at music of the 1950s-1960s are a quartet of singers and comics — Marshall Brodeur (the sort of MC), Leoney Berg, James McDuffie and Corey B. Stockton. The show is directed by Stuart Ross. And he has done a fine job.

Strings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents its 2012 Spring Concert, on Tuesday, April 3, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City. About 80 string players, including public-, private-, and home-schooled students from the Carson City area, will perform several pieces, from classics to folk and fiddle tunes. Admission is free.

Proscenium Players is holding open auditions for their August production at the Brewery Arts Center of “Steel Magnolias” directed by Abbey Gardner and produced by Melissa Knight.

Steel Magnolias is a comedy–drama play about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana. It is written by Robert Harling, based on his experience with the death of his sister. The title suggests the "female characters are as delicate as magnolias but ...as tough as steel".

Capital City Reads: A Thousand Splendid Suns

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-The Carson City Library would like to invite the entire community to participate in a citywide reading initiative to discuss the timely, and powerful message found in Khaled Hosseini’s best seller, A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The blockbuster film "The Hunger Games," now at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is an entertaining sci-fi film that has broken box-office records nationwide.

Where else have you seen the likes of Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo and Ray Romano in the same place? No where but the American Century Championship on the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Wild Horse Children’s Theater is thrilled to present the Tony Award winning musical comedy, and mixed up fairytale, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS.

Production dates are Fridays, May 4 & 11 at 7 pm, Saturdays May 5 & 12 at 4 pm and 7 pm and Sundays, May 6 & 13 at 4 pm at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson Street in Carson City.

Wild Horse Children’s Theater presents the enchanting musical Cinderella. Performances will be Friday, May 18 at 7 pm, Saturday, May 19 at 4 pm and 7 pm and Sunday, May 20 at 4 pm at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson Street in Carson City. There will also be special daytime shows for school groups on Thursday, May 17.

The action-comedy film "21 Jump Street," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, may seem a little familiar to those who saw the teen comedy "Project X" recently. And for good reason, the writer for both films was Michael Bacall. There's much of the same in both films, high school affairs drugs and teen mammoth parties.

But don't let that spook you, as bad as "Project X" was, "21 Jump Street" is loud and funny and has two fine leads, Jonah Hill as Schmidt and Channing Tatum as Jenko. In high school Schmidt was the goofball and Jenko the football star.

The luck of the Irish will be celebrated in Carson City this weekend with plenty of music, traditional fare and beverages to go around.

World travelers Dr. Chip Carroon and Pat Devereux present their “Nevada Trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit” PowerPoint show at the Nevada State Museum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 26. The Dayton-area couple will discuss images they shot while trekking 150 miles on Nepal’s most famous hiking route, in the central Himalayan Range. Minnesota prose poet Julie Gard will be reading from her new chapbook, Russia in 17 Objects (Tiger's Eye Press), at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St. Subjects include Russian literary icons, international adoption, and found objects from St. Petersburg courtyards. This event is free.

The Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams will be joined by several poets and readers and guest vocalist June Joplin for a lively evening of big-band jazz music and poetry with a new twist. For "Potluck: A Smorgasbord of Poems and Big-Band Jazz," poets names will be drawn from a hat for each reading, followed by a big band tune.

The program features award-winning poets and readers Krista Lukas, Tracy McQuay, Wayne Carlson, Lee Warner, Terri Breeden, and Joe Crowley.

Admission is $5 general at the door, and free for age 18 and under.

Special St. Patrick's Day Countdown Performance by Gairin Celtic Music, Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance, who are you musician hosts for all your favorite Irish St. Patrick's Day sing-along folk songs and tunes.

Make no mistake about it, "John Carter," playing now at the Fandango multiplex in Carson City, is a film with a nine-figure budget that takes itself seriously, although audiences may not. It's ripped from the pages of a 1912 newspaper series by Edgar Rice Burroughs of "Tarzan fame" (newspapers ran fun things like that in better times).
